Insightful Questions That Will Alter Your Leadership Approach in 2024 and Beyond

One crucial skill for both emerging and tenured leaders is the practice of reflection, a skill that exceptional leaders incorporate throughout their leadership journey. Reflection gives leaders the opportunity to not only dig deeper into themselves and their values, but to look back on what strategies worked well (and what fell short). As we set our sights on 2024, let’s take a moment to take a look back on some of the triumphs, pitfalls and opportunities for leadership development that will pave the way for success in the new year.

TWELVE QUESTIONS TO ASK YOURSELF BEFORE THE NEW YEAR

The roles and responsibilities of leaders have evolved significantly over the last few years. As we stand at the threshold of 2024, leaders have an opportunity to reflect on and reassess their priorities and team dynamics to ensure success in the new year. Reflection not only fortifies a leader's capacity to navigate future challenges that lie ahead but also serves as a catalyst for fostering resilience and innovation within teams.

Share these questions with your leaders to guide them through a reflection of this past year:

1. What leadership principles did you plant this year with your team, and how have they taken root?

Leadership principles, a set of guiding actions or beliefs that leaders stand by, provide a clear framework for decision-making and behavior. They offer guidance on how leaders should navigate challenges, make choices and set priorities. Principles act as a compass, ensuring consistency and alignment within the team.

2. Recall 3 major team projects you have accomplished in 2023. What stood out and how can you continue to foster collaboration amongst the team?

Projects have a lot of moving parts and require tremendous collaboration between individuals and teams. One of the biggest hurdles? Prioritizing cohesion. Successfully overcoming project challenges needs effective leadership.

3. Communication is key to success. How did you communicate vision to your team, and how did they respond?

In any relationship, communication is key. It helps to address concerns, clarify questions, and convey emotions. Good workplace communication creates a comfortable and effective environment.

4. Consider your leadership presence. How could you have done more to influence your team’s morale and productivity?

One key aspect of leadership is the ability to inspire confidence and trust amongst team members. A leader with a strong presence exudes confidence, authenticity, and a sense of purpose, which can instill trust and assurance in their team.

5. Evaluate the leadership development opportunities you offered your team. How will you expand upon those to keep your team engaged?

It’s necessary for existing leaders and organizations to contribute to the development of the emerging leaders and equip them to step into leadership roles that others are stepping out of.

6. How do you express gratitude to your team and recognize their daily efforts?

Studies have shown that people who practice gratitude report higher life satisfaction, stronger personal relationships, fewer symptoms of illness, increased happiness, and more. Despite these proven benefits, people are often challenged to apply gratitude to the workplace, somewhere that often needs it the most.

7. Reflect on the hardest leadership lessons you learned this year. How will you use this information to become a better leader in 2024?

Embracing and understanding the complexities of leadership through difficult experiences fosters resilience, adaptability, and a deeper understanding of one's own leadership style.

8. How did you motivate your team through uncertainty?

Rapid change means leaders are left without a roadmap. It is important to remember that motivating a team through challenging times requires a combination of transparency, empathy, and strategic communication.

9. How did you foster diversity within your team and actively promote belonging?

The most important qualities of an inclusive leader are his or her abilities to understand and enable others on the team and in the organization to work better. Diversity and inclusion aren’t just buzzwords—they’re important to long-term business success.

10. Positivity is truly powerful. How did you navigate challenges in 2023 while maintaining a positive and uplifting environment?

Positive thinking can be transformative. While dynamic work environments and challenging circumstances can lead to a negative mindset, actively working toward making positive thinking a habit in both your personal and professional life can unlock success.

11. Based on the productivity of the team, what processes were effective in streamlining workflows and what ineffective processes could be left in 2023?

Not only does streamlining processes make for a more effective team, but “trimming the fat” and discarding old, outdated systems is essential for fostering efficiency, consistency, and success.

12. Search for some leadership quotes. Which one resonates with you about this past year and why? Which one serves as motivation for 2024?

As said by Maya Angelou, “A leader sees greatness in other people. He nor she can be much of a leader if all she sees is herself.” Take a look at these leadership quotes from some of the world’s most influential leaders and unravel why the quote is so impactful for you.

Taking pause to contemplate your leadership milestones and setbacks throughout 2023 is a great investment you can make in yourself. Reflection fosters self-awareness and enables us to understand our strengths and areas for growth while cultivating a sense of accountability and mindfulness. By taking the time to reflect on the past year, leaders can better refine their leadership approach, make informed decisions, and ultimately pave the way for continued success in 2024.
