The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™

Teamwork is the most underdeveloped strategic advantage in your organization. The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ model is used to help team members learn the foundations of working together more effectively and cohesively. The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ is a facilitated one-to-three day program, grounded in the successful model from Patrick Lencioni's best-selling book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team.

Shortcuts

The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ is a one-to-three-day program designed to help teams learn about and practice the behaviors of healthy, well-functioning teams. Through a team assessment and a series of in-person sessions, members of intact teams learn about and practice applying the five behaviors that are essential to a healthy, effective team.

  • Trusting One Another: When team members are genuinely transparent and honest with each other, they are able to build vulnerability-based trust.
  • Engaging in Conflict Around Ideas: When there is trust, team members are able to engage in unfiltered, constructive debate of ideas.
  • Committing to Decisions: When team members are able to offer opinions and debate ideas, they will be more likely to commit to decisions.
  • Holding One Another Accountable: When everyone is committed to a clear plan of action, they will be more willing to hold one another accountable.
  • Focusing on Achieving Collective Results: The ultimate goal of building greater trust, conflict, commitment, and accountability is one thing—achieving greater results as a team.

The Five Behaviors program is based on the successful model from Patrick Lencioni’s best-selling book, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team, and customized based on the team’s assessment. This assessment, powered by Everything DiSC® or All Types™, helps the facilitator shape the program content based on the team’s scores on the five behaviors of a healthy, functioning, effective team.

The five dysfunctions of a team are:

  • Absence of trust
  • Fear of conflict
  • Lack of commitment
  • Avoidance of accountability
  • Inattention to results

  • Team members create a contract about how the team will succeed to create an environment of accountability.
  • The team gains the momentum to follow through on a team development plan, allowing members to continue to improve and grow together.
  • Team members learn to make better, faster decisions.
  • Team members avoid wasting time talking over the wrong issues and revisiting the same topics because of lack of buy-in.

How is The Five Behaviors of a Cohesive Team™ implemented?

The standard Five Behaviors™ program is a facilitated one or three-day workshop.

One-day Five Behaviors™ programs are designed to be fast, practical, and relevant. Participants quickly focus on the key issues where the team needs work, leaving the training with knowledge of the model and how the team is currently performing plus actionable ideas on how to move forward.

Three-day Five Behaviors™ workshops are designed to give team members the skills to work together more effectively by reviewing the team's results in the five areas of an effective team, exploring vulnerability-based trust, and developing an action plan to address high-priority items.

Participants take the pre-assessment to understand the team’s performance on each of the five behaviors, then the facilitator tailors workshop content to the group’s unique needs and areas of dysfunction. The retreat is followed by an optional re-assessment several months later to gauge the team’s progress in each area.

Other program options include:

  • Team coaching
  • Individual coaching and feedback
  • Progress assessment and webinar
  • Follow-up team sessions
  • Comparison reports
  • Group culture reports
